A few final observations -
A lot of people thought attendance was down by half. We weren’t sure it was that low but it will be interesting to see what the final count is.
Lots more women riding their own bikes than 4 years ago, and not little ones either - most were on big ol’ Road Kings.
As we said before, we were lucky weather-wise. The only time we really got rained on was in...
Saturday August 13th
Time to start heading home. Breakfast at the Cactus first and a little shopping afterwards. Larry talked to someone at the motel and he said that the Saturday before there had only been about 10 bikes in town. There were more today but still not like when we were there 4 years ago. We got going about 9:30. It was a perfect day for riding, the nicest so far, too bad we were...
Friday August 12th
The Ace Motel turned out to be a lot better than our first impression. Vicky (the owner) was great, tries to make all her guests feel right at home. We spent a lot of time at the picnic table visiting with her and other guests, most of whom were on bikes attending the rally. Two in particular we visited with quite a bit were Debbie from Calgary and Sonny from Las Vegas. Sonny...
Thursday August 11th
Breakfast was at the Belle Inn restaurant in Belle Fourche which had been recommended by a couple of friendly folks at the Ace Motel. It was your basic mom-and-pop type place which is what we are always looking for and it was good just like they had said.
The weather report was for storms north of I-90 and especially in Sturgis and Rapid City so we decided to go south again...
Wednesday August 9th
We started our day off around 8:30 making our way to Spearfish Canyon to the Lodge for breakfast. As we turned on to the canyon road a deer ran across the road right in front of Jim. We continued to the lodge, ate and then walked around at the lodge. There were a couple of girls giving massages, Jim talked Margaret into getting one so we sat and watched. She said it really...
Tuesday August 9th
Breakfast in Belle Fourche then back to the Ace to figure out what we were going to do for the rest of the day. We decided on going to Sturgis and got there by the crack of noon. First stop is always Mike and Francine’s (friends of Larry and Sandy’s who live right across the street from the police station) to park the bikes. Their house was re-done on “This...
Monday August 8th
Supper Sunday night was at the Triangle 4 just a block away from our motel. We thought it was so good we walked back down in the morning for breakfast. One of the waitresses had walked out on the owner Sunday so her 11 year old grandson was helping out Monday morning. He was a little sweetie!
Several years ago Larry & Sandy saw an old hotel in Lusk that they thought would...
Sunday August 7th
After realizing in ogallala that rooms might be scarce we made reservations in Lusk Wyoming for Sunday night so we were kind of on a schedule which was not in our original plan.
We ate breakfast at Hock’s cafe in Ogallala and hit the rode at 10:00. First stop was a state built overlook on the south side of the lake which is obviously no longer on their maintenance list....
Saturday August 6th
Altzheimer’s is great!
This is a group project and we all forgot the most important stop of the day - North Platte between Gothenberg and Ogallala. Larry was in heaven when we stopped at the world’s largest hump yard. Get your minds out of the gutter, its where they divide the trains putting the right cars with the right new train. You sit 8 stories high to...
Saturday August 6th
Our day started with breakafast at the Lodge Restaurant at the Midtown Motel in Kearney, then it was off to the Platte River Arch. Jim was pretty excited to go thru it to say the least. It was very interesting and we all enjoyed it.
From there we went to Gothenburg and toured the Pony Express Station. Unbelievable to see what they went thru. Our next stop was Oles Big Game...
Our Sturgis Trip
Friday August 5th 2011
Got off work at 4, Jim was already home and Lemons were filling up their bike across the street. We loaded the trailer, filled the bike and were on our way by 4:50 (pretty good for Martinosky time!) under partially sunny skys. By the Crete exit you could see rain ahead but I foolishly told Jim he didn’t need to stop. Within a few miles we were soaked. It was several...
